The Next Generation of Leaders

Our Leadership Training (LT) Program teaches advanced youth development and leadership skills to boys and girls beginning at age 15. The LT program is a year-round, three-year commitment. Campers, ages 14 and 15, express their interest in the program at the culmination of their Explorer or Master Explorer trip. After completing their third year in the program, LTs may apply for a counseling position at Minikani. The goals of the program are:

  1. To instill a commitment to YMCA core values and a service toward others.
  2. To develop leadership skills such as respect, responsibility, communication, and decision making, all in an outdoor setting, at Minikani and within the community.
  3. To create a well-trained group of young adults committed to leadership and helping others

About the Program

LTs are challenged. This program is unique in that it is highly rigorous both physically and in its expectations for growth. We expect those that are accepted into the program to perform at their highest ability. Two written and confidential formal evaluations are given, as well as reoccurring feedback on strengths, weaknesses and progress towards goals.

LTs are mentored. During the summer, LT I and IIs live in Halquist Lodge with the LT directors and are expected to help with camp programming as well as planning their trip. LT IIIs are staff members and work directly with counselors and unit directors.

LTs are dedicated to service. We believe that being a leader means giving back to one’s community through volunteer service. LTs complete community service hours that are required in order to continue in the program. Depending on the year of the LT level they are required to participate in a number of hours helping the community and camp. This community service must be completed before arriving at camp for the summer camp session. Throughout the year, LTs will also participate in training weekends at Minikani.
